My blog has been online since 2009 and has covered a wide range of topics. From how to do a leg kick to why violence happens in societies. For the full explanation on how this (and much more) is connected, go here: What This Blog Is Actually About.
If you want to find specific content quickly, use the sections here below:
“I want to improve my martial arts and self-defense skills”
This is where the blog started: technique breakdowns, training methodology, improving physical skills, and a lot of hard-won information about what actually works and why. Most of it applies whether you’re a beginner or have been at this for decades. Some examples:
- Free Shadow Boxing Randomizer App
- How to shadowbox series
- How to Increase Your Punching Power in Five Minutes
- How to do a leg kick series
“I’m interested in self-defense and understanding violence”
Much self-defense writing either oversimplifies things or is dogmatic. I try to avoid that and instead focus on understanding violence clearly, including the parts that are uncomfortable or don’t fit a clean framework. There’s practical advice on avoiding and managing confrontations, but also more theoretical work on why violence behaves the way it does.
- The realization that changed my self-defense training forever
- 80 Essential Books for Self-Defense
- Training to take a life
“I want to understand violence at the societal level”
Over the years, my blog has expanded beyond violence on an individual level into how it doe at scale: in communities, across societies, and geopolitics. If that seems strange for a martial arts blog, this post explains the logic. Short version: the principles that apply in a street fight apply at every other level, just with more moving parts. And those other levels you as an individual too.
- Rites of passage and self-defense
- Unintended consequences of the George Floyd protests and riots
- The age of Western humiliation
“I want to explore the podcast”
As we close in on 200 episodes, that means there’s no obvious place to start. So instead of pointing at the full archive, below are a few episodes that give a good sense of what the show covers and how it works. From there you’ll know quickly whether it’s for you.
- Episode 011: Clint Overland
- Episode 40: Marc MacYoung
- Episode 164: Strength training on any budget
- Episode 146: From Polarization to Deradicalization – Pathways Out of Extremism for a Fractured Society
There is a LOT more, but the links above are a good place to start.
The structure
My blog is free and public: decades of posts on technique, self-defense theory, training, and whatever else I thought was worth writing about.
The podcast is also free: long-form conversations with practitioners, experts, and others with specialized knowledge and experience.
If you want more than those already provide, Patreon is where the in-depth information lives: extended podcast interviews, comprehensive violence analysis, and instructional videos you can’t get anywhere else.
The blog and podcast are the public version of what I do. Patreon is the full version.
