Purse snatcher stabs wannabe hero

This incident happened a few years ago in Belgium, on the Brussels subway. A purse snatcher tries to get away after scoring some loot and a wannabe hero tries to stop him. Here’s what happened:

Some thoughts:

  • I applaud the guy for trying to stop the purse snatcher. It’s a noble act and takes courage, which many people seem to lack these days. So regardless what you think of the guy, he stood up when others didn’t. Tip of the hat to him for that.
  • Unfortunately for him, stopping an armed thief isn’t something most people have a lot of training or experience with. So trying it out of the blue can backfire on you, as it does here. You should take that into account before making such a decision. The criminals usually have a lot more experience with violence than you do, so you’re behind the curve already. [Read more…]

D.C. Caribbean Festival Street Brawl

This year’s D.C. Caribbean Festival apparently wasn’t fun enough so a bunch of idiots turned it into a street brawl. And there were plenty of idiots around:

  • Idiots fighting.
  • Idiots staying at the edges of the brawl to get a free kick or punch in whenever they could.
  • Idiots filming the thing on their cellphones.
  • Idiots watching, not having the common sense to leave right away.

There are good reasons why I don’t go to certain festivals and other public events. Fights like this are one of them. All it takes is one more idiot, one who pulls a knife and then the “fun” really starts…

Dan Inosanto Demonstration

Check out this Kali demonstration by Dan Inosanto at the Smithsonian. It dates from October of last year and is part of the Filipino American history month.

Mr. Inosanto is 73 there and look at how he moves: clear, precise and powerful. To boot, he is still very fast when he chooses to speed things up a bit.

In contrast, watch this video of him doing a demonstration in 1986:

I don’t know about you but to me, it doesn’t look like he lost much in terms of skill or physical abilities.

So if you feel like skipping class or a work out, think about this: how many workouts or classes did Dan Inosanto miss to move like that at the tender age of 73?

To those of you who have to think about it, I’m off to class in the mean time… Let’s talk again in about 35 years when I’ll be his age. :-)

Video update: Combat Sanshou

Next month, I’ll shoot the next part of my Combat Sanshou series. It’ll focus on the two main strategies and tactics I teach for the system. One of the things I will add to this new video is a couple scenarios. I have several in mind but wanted to ask you guys first:

Which type of attack would you like to see me cover in the new video? What kind of scenario do you find most interesting for an instructional video?

Just leave a comment here on this post and I’ll consider it. Of course, “Fight 27 ninjas!” type scenarios will be ignored. :-)
